Tespih Ağacının Gölgesinde

Yazar: Harper Lee

What is Hero Worship?

Barry Unsworth's novel "Losing Nelson" makes me ask the question; what is hero-worship?

Our hero is Lord Nelson whom Charles is obsessed with. Charles sees him as a perfect representative of his country's virtues and considers him as an angel. So, what is the reason for worshipping? I have an answer; to find a solution to paranoia and other troubles. We see that Charles is described as a man who has problems with his life, his mother left them and he has troubles with his father. He is described as a totally "Victorian Houses"

His searching for a solution brings big problem which makes him go to Nepal to exonerate his hero.
Journeys don't always work.
Charles never comes back to the truths.
Do everyone need a hero?

Yes, everyone needs a hero. Let's think about it; Superman was created to search for a hero. Why is he still so popular?

Yolculuklar her zaman işe yaramaz.

Charles asla gerçeklere dönmez

Herkesin kahramana ihtiyacı var mıdır?

E
vet, vardır. Bir düşünelim, Superman bir kahraman arayışından ortaya çıktı. Neden hala popüler?

Le Petit Prince / The Little Prince

The Little Prince
Antoine de Saint-Exupery
1943
Novella
Children's Literature
Belles-lettres

The book tells the story of the pilot who has crashed in the Sahara Desert and the Little Prince whom the pilot meets there. The pilot and the Little Prince who doesn't answer the questions directly become a friend. The pilot has just 8 days of water and the Little Prince doesn't understand what does water means to people and also he doesn't understand the grown-up world we see during his travel around the other planets.
During his journey, The Little Prince teaches so many things about life. The planet which he meets with the king who tells that " It is much more difficult to judge yourself than others". We see that judging yourself is the most important thing if you can judge yourself then you are a wisdom

On the second planet, he meets with a conceited man who looks for an admirer. His reaction to the conceited man is "no one else lives on this planet" and that reflects conceit brings the loneliness.

On the third planet, he meets with a drunkard who drinks to forget that he's ashamed and the reason of he's ashamed is drinking. We lean that drinking to forget is a weakness.

The fourth planet belongs to a businessman, We see that possession obsession. People should see the beauty of the stars or what they have. Having is not much a thing.

On the fifth planet, there is a lamplighter who has the order to put out the lamp and light it again in the morning. We see a little criticism to the people who do the orders even though they think that they are ridiculous.

The sixth planet which he meets with a geographer who knows the location of the seas, rivers, towns, mountains, and deserts but doesn't know his own planet. You should do your job with the passion that makes you different from others. You cannot see the others unless you can see yourself no matter how real your job or life is...

The seventh planet is Earth which he sees millions of men whom he sees on the other planets. And a fox tells him that what is important is not visible to the eye. Earth is an interesting place for the Little Prince. He sees that men are aimless and they don't know what they are looking for.

My Sweet Orange Tree / Meu Pe de Laranja Lima

My Sweet Orange Tree
Jose Mario de Vasconcelos
1968

Vasconcelos takes me into the world of Zeze. Zeze, the main character of the book, is a brilliant boy who lives in Bangu with his poor family.

Zeze is a mischievous boy and his behaviors always end with physical punishments. His curiosity about the real world makes him learn new things almost every day but sometimes it makes everyone mad. Vasconcelos describes the mindset of 5 years old boy perfectly.
His sensitivity and ability to observe and interpret impress everyone maybe it is the reason there are a lot of readers of different ages. I cannot describe the book as a "Children's Book" Recommended for adults who want to remember what is like to be a child again and all the confusion about the grown-up world.

History of Love

Instead of "really good summary for homework" I want to talk about a little detail of the book. There are chapters in the book, named "Age of Glass" "Age of String" "Birth of Feelings" "Age of Silence". These composed the History of Love.

First;

Age of Glass :

"During the age of glass, everyone believed some part of him or her to be extremely fragile." In my opinion, this era has never ended, this is described as a pure feeling. Honestly, I can say that it is the beginning of love which has full of hesitates and fears.

Age of Silence;

This era refers to ancient times when nobody knows the actual language. People talked with their mimics. This era has never ended too. Krauss mentions that the foreignness of the body as "is a way to remember how it feels to say nothing together" and

"when it’s too dark to see we find it necessary to gesture on each other’s bodies to make ourselves understood."

It represents that age of silence is both loneliness and association.

The Birth Of Feeling:

It is described as a human being. When a human being starts to feel something inside, that means life. And this is chain reaction feelings come after feelings. For example, love might turn into a hate.

On the other hand, people become more and more greedy. That is another chain reaction. The more you want the more you waste.

Age of String:

"Sometimes the smaller the distance, the greater the need for the string"

I can interpret this era as the end of life or feelings. Because when it happens you can't find a word to tell yourself. When you finish something you have nothing to say.

And also I can say that this is the era when we wanted to everything. It is the era when we worked hard to get what we want. In real history, it was the hard times for everyone. We used technology for everything

“When will you learn that there isn't

a word for everything?
